C/505 will be operating as it's own platoon at this Enfield event.

Need to start building the list so we can start forming the platoon.

Platoon Leader will be our CO - Frank.

Platoon Sergeant will be me - unless I get promoted.

Gerty will need a driver (Mongo?) and gunner.

60mm mortar- 2 men

81mm mortar - 3 men

Joe will be the platoon medic

Everybody else will be split into two squads. At least one MG. If we get two we can have one per squad.

Responsibility for patrols will rest with the squads.

Update - I've been told the 508th will be falling in with us.

I have offered Rick and his lads 2nd Squad.

We will concentrate on filling the weapons positions and first squad.  If we fill all the weapons positions and 1st Squad starts to become too large we will split and form the 3rd Squad.

The powers that be still have not decided what areas each side will hold.

So we may be defending on one side and our heavy camp will be on the other side "behind German lines".

Some of you will want to stay in your positions Friday and Saturday nights.

We will need an accurate count on who will be staying in their holes.  Only because we may be able to find a way to get chow to those positions.

Chow like hot soup and crackers - nothing fancy.

Just because you find a hole does not mean it's in a good location - or where you will be told to be.

Bring your E Tools and be ready to dig a position for cover.

We will have a lot of young/new guys with us at this event.

The weather can be anything from dry and nice to shitty, rain and cold.

If you don't have a space in a tent - be prepared to sleep rough.  At a minimum you will need a shelter half and two blankets.  That makes 2 shelter halves and 4 blankets per two man buddy team.  You may not sleep comfortable but it will not kill you.  Any non period sleeping items only come out after dark and is packed up before sunrise.

So that means most of you will be sleeping in or next to your foxholes.

A stove for your canteen cup can be made from an old can.  You can burn heat tabs or those esbit(?) tabs you can get at the outdoor store.  A taller old can and candle can make a candle lantern.

Bring your E Tools.

I will not be checking under your outer uniform and shirt.  You have good warm base layers wear them under your uniform and shirt.

the German Ardennes offensive of December 1944. A Battle of the bulge private tactical event. This will be a generic event open to individuals and units in a proper impression for the campaign.

Event Scenarios:
- Night ops will be determined based upon site and light conditions and also based upon the number of participants available for nighttime engagements.
-Saturday Scenario. Late December 1944, the OKW (German High Command) Has ordered the cessation of offensive operations, Allied forces are not quite ready to begin a counter offensive. Both sides will begin in prepared positions. With a day of small offensives to gain better tactical positions, counter attacks, patrols, position prep and maintenance, casualty collection, life in the field.
Main Stream Reenacting / Immersion:
-Though not a full Immersion event this will also NOT be a typical run and gun tactical. While in the field this event will be as immersive as individuals and units make it. It is up to participants to make the event immersive not only with props , but also with attitude and expectations.

Guys, if you need ammo order it now. Don't wait and be caught short.

I'll post the full light data this weekend.  Look at it and try to get there well before dark on Friday.  It goes "hot" at noon Friday but that afternoon is basically establishing lines and positions, getting a look at our sector.

Shooting starts at 2000 hours and runs until 2300 hours.

If you get there after dark you are not going to just saddle up and wander off into the dark to the sound of the guns.  You will be held at the platoon rear until a small group is gathered and a guide will show up and take you down to the platoon area.  This will become even more complicated if we are set up on the far side and the platoon rear is "behind enemy lines".  So show up before well dark.

Short version - sunset on Friday is 1739 hrs (5:39 PM) (Raleigh location).  Full moon weekend - moon rise 1841 hrs with 99.6 illumination.

To give you guys a heads up as to what I expect.

We will be portraying and Infantry Platoon on the front line.  As such after you move up to the line one person is "always looking" toward the enemy zone.  Nobody standing up rubbernecking at the tree tops.  All that should be poking up above the front of your position is steel pots and eyeballs - at least one set at all times.

I will try and use two squads as the front with one in reserve - which means the front line will be thin - so keep those eyeballs looking out.  The reserve squad will be used to reinforce the line at the main point of their thrust.

For the squads on the front - nobody wanders off.  If you think you may want to wonder go ask the squad leader.  Squad Leader tell him "no" and to get back in his hole.  SL's, monitor the water levels of your guys.  When water starts to run low one troop gathers all the canteens from the squad.  If you have 1/2 a canteen pour it in your canteen cup and pass your canteen over.  That troop and the troop from the other squad will make the water run together.  If you really love your canteen then mark it on the side with a permanent marker or scratch you name in it.  Some of you might want to check your web gear and make sure you have a canteen.  Not to say it will but - if something like chow or hot soup shows up one man from each position leaves to get it and bring it back.  And the other guy?  You guessed it - he's eyeballs out.

If we get to run two forward and one back I'll rotate squads in and out so the one in the rear can stretch and relax a bit.  But that squad is subject to immediate deployment based on enemy activity.

Noise and light discipline Friday night.  If you are on the front line and are plopped in a hole the next three hours will probably be the longest three hours of your life.  Your job will be to look and listen as long as you are there.  No talking, no taking out your flashlight because you want to drag out your kit so you can brew up a cup of coffee.  SL's, enforcing that is your job.  The event stands down at 2300 hrs so you can relax and light up the candle lanterns and heat up chow or drinks if you are staying on the line.  Just remember to keep it low in your hole.  Try and start developing good habits.

The above is just the basics.  I will expect more at the event.

Issues

A big issue we will have is which side of the field we will be on.  If our lines are on the same side as our heavy camp it relieves a number of problems - if on the other side it will make things much more complicated.

If you get there around noon on Friday the time under "tactical" conditions will only be about 29 hours.

From all you coming we need to know:

1st - Are you planning on staying tactical for the 29 hours and remain in the vic of our forward platoon position?  I will be remaining in the vic of the platoon HQ and front line for the 30 hours and come back to the heavy camp for Saturday Supper.  The Plt CP will be very Spartan but have a fly, oil lantern and water.

2nd - Are you eating any meals in the mess?  Menu and prices have been posted.  Or are you planning on eating out of your musette bag like me?

3rd - Are you staying Saturday or are you packing up and hitting the road when Endex is called?

I'll be arriving by noon and staying out in the Platoon HQ and will be leaving Sunday AM. I'll eat the same as everyone in the FOB. I'll bring K rations and eat anything hot as the chance arrives.

Friday - the event goes "hot" at 1200 hrs but that is for establishing positions, checking what's in front of you, etc, etc.

When you arrive at the "front lines" the first priority is establishing your fighting positions.

Those who get there early will have a jump on those getting there after dark.  Those getting there after dark will spend the next good bit of time digging in.

If - I say again - if - we are tasked with sending out any LP/OP's or patrols that afternoon, early evening or from 2000 hrs to 2300 hrs it will come from those who are set up and ready.  I will try and keep squad integrity as much as possible.  If the squad leader or assistant has not arrived yet the senior man present will be in charge  and will lead any troops from his squad.

When you show up report to the platoon rear (our heavy camp).  After the first batch of troops go out with me we will establish our base line.  Those arriving after that will hold at the platoon rear with the Platoon leader, Frank.  When 3 or 4 or so are ready I'll send a runner out to pick you up and take you to the Plt HQ in the field.  From there you will be directed to your squads.
