The term "I have my combat jacket" means nothing until you identify what type of jacket it is.
C/505th is not a cosplay unit in an OD green theme.
We portray a unit of the 82nd Airborne division during different periods of the war. As sure each period has specific uniform requirements. Each member should strive to portray each period as accurately as they they can.
You come from Civil War reeanacting? Many of us came from there. In that community you had the Hard Core, Campaigners and Mainstream. The Mainstream was infested with FARBs who liked to theme camp in blue and gray, drink all weekend and laugh at anyone who mentioned correct drill.
Below is a picture of our squad taken at what you would consider a Hard Core event. We were portraying a squad from the 82nd during Market Garden. You see very little variation in the look. That correct period look is what you should strive for.

1942 reinforced paratrooper jacket is what it is. Yeah I was Civil War... Confederate actually at that, I was in mainstream units... last unit I was in everyone was camping in modern clothing and had brought their RV'S... I hadn't been so sad in all my life ðŸ˜
