101st Airborne Division Headquarters, Reconnaissance Platoon was formed in 2017 at Toccoa, GA to provide a 101st unit for those doing 101 in this area overrun by 82nd without doing the “misdropped paratrooper” cliche. The founding members of 101 Recon had previously done events with C/505 and had, and still have, a strong bond with C/505. We chose the designation we did so we could represent more than just another company of parachute infantry. For tactical purposes we deploy as the division Reconnaissance Platoon providing both mounted and dismounted scouting assets almost always in support of larger units like C/505. As a Living History display, we set up as part of division HQ. This allows us to incorporate a wide variety of division assets including: division staff, division artillery, Military Police, glider and parachute infantry, medical plus other impressions as attached personnel. Attached personnel other units in support, additional medical, Transportation Corp, Quartermaster Corp, supporting armor and tank destroyer forces and WACs. Our goal as a headquarters level unit is to assist line units like C/505 and also coordinate the activities of multiple line and support units as a particular event may dictate. This can be done in a support role or in a lead role at various events. We currently have members in Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia and are working with units in North Carolina, Virginia, PA, NY and NJ who portray airborne, armored infantry, Air Corp, WAC and even British Para.
One of our main events is Currahee Military Weekend in Toccoa, GA. Our focus is to honor ALL the airborne at this “hallowed ground” of the parachute infantry. The support of many units including C/505 made this past years event a wonderful success for all involved. It was an honor for us to coordinate many of the activities this past year and to support 1/505 Pathfinders in their first official event including “3 Miles Up, 3 Miles Down” Currahee Mountain with full uniform and equipment. We are excited about 2019, both for events we will be in a lead role, a partner role and a support role. Stay tuned for some truly remarkable opportunities in 2019.
