Summer in the Field
The Enfield Tactical is right around the corner - early next month.
Hot weather events at Enfield cause a big problem with troops on the line. By early afternoon troops are out of water while still running hard. Water sources are few and far between.
Some buy a case of water bottles and try and stuff their pockets full of the bottles. That does present an eyesore at the event and lots of trash.
There is a solution that's not too bad - you can refill your canteen out of sight.
The juice isle of your local store has many flavors of juice that come in 2 qt bottles.
Two of them will slip into an ammo bag with room to spare. One takes up very little space in a haversack.
If you are going to be on the line Friday evening to Saturday afternoon you might want to pack in your extra water this way. They can even be painted.

Rations
Weather will be hot but you'll still need to eat while on the line.
Review the winter in the field thread for building a couple of K Rations. Two K Rations and a can of relabeled beans should get you through Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon.
If you are staying on the line you'll only need your standup fighting gear, limited "kitchen" items and a poncho, shelter half or rain coat to cover up with or lay on at night.

There are ticks, red bugs (chiggers), ants, mosquitoes and flies in uncountable numbers on site.
Keeping your boots bloused and shirt/T shirt tucked in will keep ticks from getting into those hard to check regions.
As an added precaution pick up a can of Permethrin and the weekend before the event spray your boot tops, pants from the knees down, pants around the waist, both sides of the belt, inside and outside of the jacket cuffs, front zipper area and collar.
Get a small squirt bottle of the cream bug juice to keep in your pocket. Not the spray can or pump bottle. The cream is easy to put on in targeted areas and the small bottle is less "intrusive" to others.

Besides keeping hydrated, if you have ever been a heat casualty your chances of it happening again are increased. And, they increase each time you are hit with it again. If you have been a heat casualty, write this information on your Personnel Medical Information Card along with your listed medications and medical conditions. I will be issuing the cards when you sign the unit roster at Enfield.

If staying on the line, the only "kitchen" items you really NEED is a spoon, your canteen cup and a P-38 can opener. This is also how many veteran troops traveled. It didn't take them long to learn to travel light (except for food, water and ammo). Leave the mess tin and extra utensils behind. Also you can supplement your rations by tossing some fruit into a musette bag. Lemons, oranges, pears and figs are all native to Italy and would be accurate.
