Mess Report Waxhaw 8-9-10:
Personnel: Jenkins, Smith, Philbeck at 2 pm Friday, and Early at 7-8pm Friday
Early arrival: Arrived Thursday afternoon and proceeded with canvas set up. Moved almost everything out of the trailer with the exception of the stoves. Ronnie and I took up residence in the mess tent, and after setting up our cots, and the placement of Ronnie's heater, we were set for the sleeping arrangements.
When Al Brightsen arrived we went down to Lancaster and partook of chicken wings.
Back in camp by eight pm. Sat with the Chief for awhile and swapped stories. In the bed by 10 pm.
Friday: Late to get up but fixed coffee and a late brunch, then moved the M 37s. Imersion heaters set up, fueled, and water placed.
With the arrival of Philbeck, we began prep for supper. Everyone agreed it was a good meal. Once the dishes were cleaned up we spent sometime visiting. In the bed by 8 pm.
Began raining at approx 9:30 pm and continued until 3 am.
Saturday: Delayed rising because of the cold weather, but the coffee was ready for the first person to plug it in to the power outlet.
Breakfast was delayed because of the frozen LP cylinders, so we used the burners, otherwise, it went off without a hitch.
Lunch was prepared. Maybe it was bit spice but it was good.
Supper was prepared around 5 pm. Once more the dishes were cleaned up. The large LP tanks were disconnected and put in the lady's room to keep them warm overnight.
To bed early.
Sunday: Same story with the coffee. Breakfast started without a hitch this time. Clean-up completed and backing began. All equipment, flys, and bedding put away.
Problems:. The kitchen crew was spread out. LP tanks were frozen Saturday am, but by putting them in a warm environment Saturday night, we eliminated the problem. Too much food made for lunch and supper Saturday, however, it was low cost food.
Clean up after meals was drawn out because we only had partial help from the crew. Inspite of a meal being finished, the crew needs to hang around and pick up spices, unused utensiles, put away food stuffs such as cheeses, etc.
Positives:. KP went great. Despite cold temps in the am we got two meals prepared. Thanks to all the men who helped with KP, and to those who helped with the pack up-you know who helped.
On the way home by 10:30 am.
